Jasmine's Blog has moved to Blogger

Jasmine's blog has been hosted by TypePad for 3-1/2 years. They are currently in the process of switching over to a new blog format with the focus on networking. Since Jasmine's blog is only used as a vehicle to keep folks up to date on what is happening here at Guinea Pig Fun, I have decided to move the blog to Blogger, which is where I had posted the updates for the website a while ago. Lucky loves the hay!

When Lis adopted Rocky this past weekend she donated a box of hay to GPF and Lucky loves it! Thanks, Lis! (Click the photo to see a larger image of Lucky enjoying his hay.)

Separated ...

Why? Because they are being obnoxious. That's why! Wheek! [The three males from the shelter who are being fostered were separated last night to try to bring some peace to the group. Ted, the white one, is now in a cage by himself. He was trying to challenge Sparky, the black-faced dominant pig, so there should be some relief now. Reggie, the orange one, just scoots away from both of them. He is still in the cage with Sparky and it is hoped that they will work out long term so they can be adopted together. Reggie still shrieks when being picked up and Ted still chatters when one tries to take him out of his cage. They are housed on Aspen shavings because they burrow and hide underneath fleece.]

Bobby did it!

I saw him yank hair out of Scooter! Call the guinea pig police now!!! Wheek! [Bobby seems to quietly destroy Scooter's hair. Scooter is a young Silkie male with potentially beautiful long hair. However, it constantly has the chopped look since Bobby barbers it short and jagged. As you can see by the photo, Bobby is quite please with himself.]

Check them out! [The Marin Humane Society will be placing the three males after they have been fostered for a couple of more weeks to make sure that their mites are gone and that they are more socialized. Although they had no open wounds from scratching, they were hyper-sensitive to touch and their cage mates and to their environment. So far they have been treated six times with Ivermectin and their coats look great. Click photos to view larger images.]

New photo of Daisy sleeping

... for a few minutes! Daisy ... no more stepping in the water! No more dumping the stool upside down! Too much noise! Call the ASPCA! Wheek! [Daisy got spayed last weekend and she is doing quite well. She's back in her ex-pen now and has been quite busy rearranging her area. She's got one of Ian's awesome handmade house (made from a recycled wooden wine box) so now she can't dump her house upside down like she did with her stool. She has managed to step in her water bowl so it needs to be refilled more frequently. The good news ... aside from the fact that she is still very friendly ... she is almost 100% litter box trained as a result of her spay operation! She has two litter boxes right now and will get a wider storage box next weekend to use as a litter box.]

Rocky got adopted!

Lis adopted Rocky Roo! He is so happy! Wheek! [Rocky was one of the "females" who needed to be placed early this spring. All of them were underweight but otherwise healthy. However, they were all males not females. Gradually they put on weight but both of the long-haired pigs ended up with pneumonia which none of the other pigs got. They are healthy now and Lis chose Rocky after meeting them in her home yesterday. Lis made a tent for Rocky and he loved it! In a little while he will get to meet Lis' other two male pigs, Oreo and Cookie. If they become friends they will live together otherwise Rocky will have a bachelor pad nearby. He is not a candidate for a neuter (so he can live with a female) since the radiologist found that he had an enlarged heart that he thought was due to the pneumonia. However, he is healthy now and does not display any symptoms of a "heart" pig.]

Why is there a cat in the cottage?

Whats' with that? It's for guinea pigs! First it's Molly. Then it's Willie. And then it's Dorita! No more cats in the cottage. [I was putting the cover on the a cottage made by Marsha/The Cozy Cavy and suddenly Molly was underneath it. Next came Willie and then Dorita. Finally Emma Lou got to try it out and she loved it.]

Why is there a rabbit in the kitchen???

No rabbits in the kitchen ... period! Call the ASPCA! Wheek! [The rabbit arrived here a week ago. A family rescued her from a parking lot a month earlier and were no longer able to care for her. The local shelter and rabbit rescue are constantly overwhelmed with rabbits so they were not options. I already had a neuter set up for a guinea pig this past weekend so I just switched it to have the rabbit spayed. She is very friendly and loves to be petted. However, she HATES to be held ... most rabbits do not appreciate being held but as my vet put it "she's feisty" (when being held). She is a dream to give her meds. I don't hold her when I give the meds. I just pet her head and insert the syringe of Metacam. I'm not sure if I will try to bond her with Lucky my neutered male rabbit. What's with the 3 Muskateers?

Who names guinea pigs Orange, White, and Black?!! That's what I want to know. Get a replacement staff person STAT! This one is loosing it! Wheek! [Last month I was asked if I had any suggestions on how to handle and tame very scared guinea pigs. I offered some suggestions and a couple of weeks later saw that they were advertised on Craigslist. I noticed that it looked like at least one of the pigs had mites so I contacted the person who volunteers at the shelter. I ended up going over to see them and they did in fact have a bad case of mites. Plus, they were the most terrified pigs I have ever seen. Five of them were surrendered together and two had already been placed. I offered to foster the three males while I treated them with Ivermectin but that wasn't an option. I ended up taking them since it was unknown when they would be seen by a vet and they were clearly suffering. While I was there someone that the shelter knew came in looking for a companion for her female so she adopted Sammy, a neutered male, from me the next day. How are they doing now? They have had a few treatments of Ivermectin and are doing much better although they are still quite skittish. Click the photos to see what they look like when they first arrived.]

What's with Jenni and Angelina's hair?????? And Bobby's hair?

Where did Bobby's curls go??? Hellllllloooooooooooooo ... call the guinea police ASAP! Someone cut off all of their hair! Wheek! [It was in the 90's today and way too hot for the Peruvians (long haired guinea pigs). Jenni does not do well with the heat at all and she and Jenni start to spar off when they get too hot and irritated. I Decided to use the pet shaver to trim their hair and also Bobby's, a Texel with long curly hair. Jenni and Angelina are in the cam cage so their short hair may be seen there.]
